How I Make Every Family Photo Session Feel Personal
Creating a Stress-Free Experience with Music, Play, and Personal Connection
As a family photographer in Abu Dhabi—and a mom of two myself—I know one thing for sure: if your kids aren’t having fun, no one’s having fun.
That’s why I put so much care and thought into how I work with children during photo sessions. Whether I’m photographing toddlers, siblings, or a whole family, my goal is always the same: to make your kids feel comfortable, excited, and free to be themselves.
This blog is a little peek behind the scenes of what goes into making that happen—and why it makes such a difference in your final photos.
1. I Send a Personalized Video to Your Child Before the Session
Meeting a stranger with a camera can feel overwhelming to small kids. That’s why, before some of my sessions, I send a short video message directly to your child.
In the video, I introduce myself, say their name, and tell them a little about what we’ll do during the photo shoot—usually something like running, dancing, or playing. This makes the session feel familiar and fun right from the start. I’ve even had kids send a video back, which is always such a sweet way to begin building trust.
Parents often tell me this small step made a big difference, especially for shy children or first-time photo shoots.
2. I Create a Playlist of Their Favorite Songs
Before your session, I ask about your child’s favorite music—and then I use that to create a custom playlist. We play their favorite songs during the session to keep the energy high and their mood upbeat. Whether it’s Cocomelon, Encanto, or a playlist full of Taylor Swift or Spiderman theme songs, it helps kids relax and enjoy themselves.
And for you? It means fewer awkward silences, more genuine smiles, and a totally different vibe than a typical “smile-for-the-camera” experience.
3. I Turn the Session Into a Game
My sessions aren’t about stiff poses or forced grins. Instead, we play. I use age-appropriate activities and silly prompts to get your kids moving, laughing, and interacting naturally with you.
Think:
- races through the dunes
- hide and seek at the park
- dance breaks at home
- tickles and cuddles between photos
These games are not just fun—they’re strategic. They help create movement, connection, and real emotion that shows up beautifully in your images.
4. I Follow Their Lead
As much as I guide the session, I also know when to let go. If your child needs a moment to reset, have a snack, or just cuddle with you, that’s okay. I’m incredibly patient and flexible, because I know kids aren’t robots—and I never expect them to “perform” on demand.
Sometimes the sweetest, most emotional images happen in those quieter pauses anyway.
Why This Approach Works
You might be surprised how often I hear, “I was so nervous about how the kids would behave,” or “I didn’t think we’d get any good shots.”
But when kids are having fun, and they’re allowed to just be themselves? That’s when the magic happens. You get photos that are full of joy, connection, and personality—the kind of images that truly reflect your family.
And most importantly, your kids leave the session feeling proud, happy, and seen.
